My favourite mythical (or hopefully not-so-mythical) creatures

Is it weird that I feel bad saying that these are ‘mythical creatures’ because a part of me hopes that some of these are actually real? To decide on my favourites I had a very small criteria:

A) Would I want this creature as my pet; or

B) Would I want this creature as my ally.

Obviously I am not going to have the humanoids as pets, that would make for a creepy story where I play the villain. But with the pets, I like to think of the Neverending Story where Bastian is riding Falcor’s back shouting “YEAH” – however remove Bastian and Falcor and replace Steff riding a Pegasus….SWEEEEET!!!!

So here is my list of my fave mythical (or hopefully not-so-mythical) creatures:

Dragon – Pet

Overgrown fire-breathing lizards, and pretty badass. Ever since I saw Dragon Heart when I was a kid (you know, the movie where Dennis Quaid attempts to talk Scottish…or English…or something other than American) I have wanted a dragon. I have dreamed about dragons, and in my dreams they are always friendly and not mean like Smaug from The Hobbit.

Unicorn – Pet

I agree with JK Rowling that if you kill a Unicorn, it takes your soul. Whyyyy would you want to harm one of these beautiful creatures?!?! They are pretty, smart and are usually accompanied by rainbows and glitter which I am allll about. Unicorns are pretty much the best.

Mermaid – Ally

Ok well I like the nice Mermaids anyway…like Ariel. The ones from myths are beautiful but lure men to their untimely deaths which I think is a bit mean. It would be nice to think that if you fell in the ocean, there would be a friendly set of hands to save you and take you ashore. Which is why I will remain hopeful that these creatures are real, in case it’s one of those cases where “if you don’t believe, they will die” sort of thing. Better to be on the safe side.

Fairy – Ally

I just think of Labirynth now, where Hogall is spraying the fairies that fly around the plants. Don’t pick them up, they bite! I mostly associate Fae now from all of Sarah J Maas’ books…oh and Sookie Stackhouse. So now I am inclined to think “beautiful, handsome, strong and powerful” rather than “pretty, wings, fairy dust and magic”.

Nessie – Ally

So this is definitely one creature I don’t like putting on this list. If you have ever been to Loch Ness, you will understand because it feels like there is something lurking beneath the surface. Nessie is a good-guy though, not bad (in my dreams anyway).

Centaur – Ally

I find it a little disturbing to think of how these creatures came about…but let’s not delve into that. It would be super awesome to be part human but have horsepower (hahahaha). Plus Centaur’s always seem to be super awesome with a bow and arrow, one talent I wish I had…like Katniss.

Hippogriff – Pet

I love hippogriff’s not only because they are super awesome, but also because Buckbeak attacked Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter.

Banshee – Ally

I mostly put this creature on this list because I am scared of them. When I was in Grade 1, I had an Irish teacher and she put on a movie that had a banshee in it. For those of you who don’t know what a banshee is, it is an Irish female spirit who heralds death by shrieking or wailing. I remember that night when I went to bed, it was a really windy night and it therefore sounded like there was a banshee coming to get me. It made me super scared, and even now when it’s really windy I still think of banshees.

Elf – Ally

I like elves, though sometimes I guess it’s hard to say what side they are really on. Any stories they are in, they tend to kind of just be in it for themselves though I apologise if this is not correct. I would want these guys fighting on my side however because they are super badass with their weapons and magic.

Pegasus – Pet

I want a Pegasus sooooooo bad!!!! A horse that can fly? Um yeah, I’ll take one!! They are so beautiful and majestic, and no-one can’t NOT take you seriously. All I would need is a super awesome sword (a light one because I have weak arms) and a purple tunic with rainbow glitter on it…

Great post, I particularly enjoyed the Dragon Heart and Hoggle references. They are my faves.

I can’t quite get behind fae as lithe, tall, strong people. For me, they will always be Labyrinth-esque. Not necessarily pretty and sparkly, but definitely small. 😛

Haha yeah I know what you mean, even now when I explain the fae in books like Throne of Glass I can see people thinking of small people with wings 😀 Thanks do much, I’m glad you like it 💜
